Sharp Start Academy
Sparking Young Minds for a Brighter Tomorrow
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is Sharp Start Academy?
Sharp Start Academy is a live, online weekend school for students in Grades 4 - 7. Each month, we focus on a real-life skill that prepares students for success both inside and outside the classroom. Lessons are interactive, engaging, and taught by a certified teacher with years of experience and expertise in that month’s theme, bringing real-world insight and meaningful learning to every lesson.
Why does Sharp Start Academy focus on life skills when schools already teach academics?
While traditional schools focus on academics, the world our children are growing up in looks very different. With artificial intelligence advancing rapidly, many routine tasks are now automated. What can’t be replaced are the human skills — communication, empathy, leadership, creativity, and problem-solving. At Sharp Start Academy, we focus on building these essential life skills so children can think critically, connect meaningfully, and thrive in a world where real human qualities matter most.
What subjects or skills will my child learn?
We teach 12 rotating monthly themes that focus on real-life skills such as Financial Literacy, Communication Skills, Time Management, Problem Solving, Leadership, and more. Each theme is explored for one full month and taught through live, engaging lessons. Themes repeat each year with refreshed content, allowing students to deepen their understanding and apply skills in new ways as they grow. Each month also stands on its own, so students can join at any time. You can view the full list of themes on our Monthly Themes page.
Who teaches the classes?
All classes are taught by a certified teacher with years of classroom and real-world experience, specializing in elementary and middle school education.
How are Sharp Start Academy classes taught?
All classes are taught live via Zoom, a secure and reliable platform trusted by schools worldwide. Students can join with a single click — no account needed. Each session is led in real time by a certified teacher, creating an engaging, interactive classroom experience from home. Small group sizes ensure every student can participate, ask questions, and receive personalized feedback.
How do students access their live classes?
Once you register for a class, you’ll automatically receive a confirmation email with your private Zoom link and session details. Sharp Start Academy uses a secure Zoom connection integrated through our platform, ensuring every student joins safely and easily. All classes are live, interactive, and only accessible to registered students. Families don’t need to download anything extra — simply click the link at class time and join in!
Why does Sharp Start Academy use Zoom instead of Google Meet or Microsoft Teams?
We chose Zoom because it offers the most interactive, classroom-like experience for our students. Its features — like breakout rooms, hand-raising, chat participation, and easy screen sharing — help make every lesson dynamic and personal. It’s also simple for families to use, with no complicated logins or downloads required beyond the app itself. Our goal is to make learning seamless, engaging, and focused on connection — not tech setup.
How big are the class sizes?
We keep our classes small and interactive. Each group has a limited number of students so every child has the chance to participate, ask questions, and receive personal attention from the teacher. This ensures the learning experience feels supportive and engaging, not overwhelming.
When are the classes held?
We offer two live sessions each weekend to accommodate families worldwide:
-
Saturdays: 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM PT
-
Saturdays: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM PT
-
Families choose the time that works best. Classes include short breaks so students can recharge. If time zones are an issue, we will try to accommodate.
How much does tuition cost?
Tuition is $247 CAD per month, which covers 8 hours of live weekend instruction led by a certified teacher. Unlike traditional tutoring programs that often cost $300–$600/month, Sharp Start Academy combines premium quality with better value — real-life skills, small group interaction, and global community learning.
Do you record the classes?
No. All classes are live only to ensure privacy and encourage real-time participation.
Why doesn’t Sharp Start Academy use social media to promote the academy?
We focus on delivering the best possible learning experience instead of managing social media. This protects privacy, builds productive citizens, and keeps attention on learning — not likes or shares. Our teaching quality and word-of-mouth speak for themselves.
What if my child misses a class?
While classes are not recorded, we can provide a short recap or extra activity so your child can catch up.
Can my younger child join?
Live classes are for Grades 4 – 7, but younger kids can start learning through our bookstore, which offers illustrated books aligned with each theme.
Do you offer sibling discounts or tiered pricing?
No. Pricing is simple and the same for everyone.
What technology is needed?
A stable internet connection, computer or tablet with camera/mic, and Zoom installed. Headphones are recommended.
Do you give homework?
No formal homework, but we may suggest optional activities to help students practice skills in real life.
Can parents watch the class?
Parents are welcome to observe quietly, especially for the first session, but the focus should stay on the student’s independence.
Do I have to commit for the whole year?
No. Families can enroll month-to-month. Each month covers a different life skill (such as Time Management, Problem Solving, or Leadership). You can join for just one month, or stay for several — whatever fits your child’s needs.
What makes Sharp Start Academy different from Kumon, Mathnasium, or Outschool?
-
No worksheets, no apps — only live, interactive instruction.
-
Certified teacher leading every class.
-
Focus on real-world life skills schools don’t teach, not just academics.
-
Premium small-group learning for $247/month — less than half the cost of private tutoring, but with greater impact.
How do you keep students safe online?
Student safety is our top priority. All classes are hosted in a secure Zoom environment with a waiting room enabled — only registered students are admitted. Classes are never recorded, and personal information is never shared. We maintain a respectful, positive learning space at all times.
How does the bookstore fit in?
Our bookstore is designed for younger learners (Preschool - Grade 3) who may not yet be ready for live Academy classes. Each book introduces the same life skill themes in a fun, story-based format that kids can easily understand.
Why are the books only available through Amazon?
We use Amazon so families worldwide can buy our books easily. Amazon ensures secure checkout, fast delivery, consistent print quality, and affordable pricing. This allows us to focus on teaching and creating great content, while Amazon handles printing and shipping.
Is my payment information secure?
Yes. All tuition payments are processed through our secure checkout system, which uses industry-standard encryption and trusted global payment providers. Your financial information is never stored by Sharp Start Academy. Parents can pay with confidence knowing their transactions are safe and protected.

We're built around clear safety practices from day one: waiting rooms, no recordings, and no social media distractions.
